beta, attaches itself to any magically active life form and devours its
magical energy. This includes mages/shamans, spirits, and dual-natured
creatures. Ares Macrotechnology troops under the code name Operation Extermination,
without the permission or knowledge of the UCAS government, saturate the
Chicago Containment Zone with Strain-III beta. This weakens the insect
spirits to the point where they can be killed with conventional weapons.
It also causes the death of many magically active and dual-natured beings
including the ghouls of Cabrini Refuge. A secondary effect is zones where
magic doesn't work properly known as voids.
